IG Kanja appeals for more resources to strengthen National Police Service

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has appealed to Parliament to allocate additional resources to the National Police Service (NPS), saying greater funding is critical to boosting manpower, enhancing training, and strengthening logistical support in the fight against rising security threats.

Speaking on Friday, August 22, 2025, during the 3rd Leadership Retreat of the 13th Parliament in Mombasa, themed “Social Transformation through Institutional Comity,” Kanja highlighted the police’s central role in safeguarding both democracy and the people of Kenya.

“As head of the National Police Service, I am acutely aware of the enormous responsibility bestowed upon me by the Constitution and the people of Kenya,” he said, noting that policing requires candid dialogue, consensus building, and close collaboration with other state institutions.

The Inspector General told MPs and Judiciary officials that the police service needs more resources to recruit additional officers, provide continuous training, and acquire vital logistical support such as vehicles, equipment, and modern technology.

These, he said, would enable the NPS to address evolving transnational crimes, including cybercrime, human trafficking, wildlife trophy trafficking, drug trafficking, money laundering, and organ harvesting.

He further emphasised the importance of institutional cooperation, urging all arms of government to foster coexistence for the seamless functioning of the Republic.

“While all arms of government have distinct roles, it is imperative to strike a progressive balance and foster coexistence for the common good,” he noted.

Kanja also challenged the Judiciary to ensure that court orders remain reasonable and aligned with the public interest. He assured both Parliament and the Judiciary that the NPS remains committed to guaranteeing their personal security, given the risks associated with their offices.

The forum brought together top state officials, including Chief Justice Martha Koome, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula, Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Supreme Court justices, judges of the Court of Appeal and High Court, select members of parliamentary committees, NIS Director General Noordin Haji, DIG Eliud Lagat, and DCI Mohamed Amin.
